ESRC Funding

We are excited to announce our new grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Rapid Impact Fund working in collaboration with the University of Sheffield! This funding will enable us to expand the reach of our UV camera volcano monitoring technology.

We will be upgrading two temporary systems in Costa Rica previously provided to OVISCURI-UNA into two permanent UV camera systems, installing one at Turrialba in August this year. While on location we will be working with local volcanologists and continuing our collaboration with monitoring organisation OVISCURI-UNA to install the systems and provide comprehensive training on system use and maintenance as well as data processing.

The funding will also allow us to upgrade the existing PiCam at Popocatepetl, Mexico to a permanent system. This is a new collaboration with a group who have wanted a UV camera at
this location for an extended period of time. And, working with our long-standing collaborators, Ckelar Volcanes in Chile, we hope to transfer the system already in place at Lascar to Villarrica. Although successful, the camera at Lascar is difficult to access given its remoteness and altitude. We plan to move this camera to a more active and easily accessible system, at
Villarrica.

We are very excited for the opportunities this funding has afforded us and can’t wait to get to work on these new projects! Be sure to keep an eye on our website and social media pages for further updates as our team gets out into the field.
