CIGEFLU 2025
Dr. Thomas Wilkes will be travelling to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile next week to take part in this years CIGEFLU International Course on Geochemistry of Volcanic and Geothermal Fluids, hosted by our friends and long term collaborators at Ckelar Volcanes. The course is designed to teach and give hands on fieldwork experience of various gas monitoring techniques and equiptment to budding volcanologists from around the globe. Dr. Wilkes will be teaching the remote sensing of volcanic gases, specifically detection from more removed distances using predominantly UV cameras and spectrometers.
This will be the team’s third visit to CIGEFLU; Dr. Wilkes attended in 2021 and Dr. Tom Pering in 2023 (pictured below), both in the capacity of international expert instructors on ground based monitoring of volcanic gases. Dr. Wilkes is excited to be returning to share his expertise, “I think the great thing about the course is giving students hands-on experience with equipment in real and exciting volcanic settings. We get to experience quite a broad range of volcanism in a short period of time, and all within relatively close proximity to San Pedro de Atacama. Getting to experience such a stunning environment is always a privilege!”
CIGEFLU runs from October 26th to November 1st 2025 in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. For more information about the course you can visit the CIGEFLU webpage or follow ckelarvolcanes on social media. We will also be sharing some of Dr. Wilkes’ time in Chile via our Instagram and Facebook pages, so be sure to follow us.
